Our veterinarians at Sheridan Animal Hospital recommend the use of heartworm preventative medication on a year round basis in accordance with the American Animal Hospital Association and the American Heartworm Society guidelines. This recommendation is not only for the prevention of heartworm disease year round, but also for the added benefit of intestinal parasite control that most heartworm medications include.
Heartworm disease, which is transmitted by mosquitoes, is primarily a parasite of dogs. The adult heartworms live in the heart and large blood vessels exiting the heart, hence the name, heartworm disease! Signs of heartworm disease include coughing, weakness, decreased appetite, and exercise intolerance. If left untreated, heartworm disease can progress to congestive heart failure and death. The good news is that is a completely preventable disease!
A yearly heartworm test must be performed, even if your pet receives year round prevention. Giving a heartworm positive dog heartworm preventative medication can be extremely harmful depending on the stage of the heartworm infection.
The heartworm medication Sheridan Animal Hospital recommends for your pet is:
Sentinel: A chewable, once per month flavor tablet that protects your dog from heartworm infection and also controls flea populations by preventing the egg from maturing into an adult flea. Sentinel also controls adult hookworm infections and removes and controls adult roundworm and whipworm infections. Click on the picture to the right for more information on Sentinel.
